Skin Pigmentation: Cosmetic Options, Limits and Safety

Skin Pigmentation: Cosmetic Options, Limits and Safety

Pigmentation is a cosmetic description

Uneven colour can reflect several different concerns. A new, changing, bleeding, painful or otherwise unexplained mark should be assessed appropriately before it is treated as ordinary cosmetic pigmentation.

Sun and light protection

Ultraviolet exposure can darken many pigmentation concerns. Use shade, suitable clothing and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and adequate UVA protection. Sunscreen helps limit further darkening but does not remove an existing mark.

Topical cosmetic products

Products intended to improve the appearance of uneven tone have formulation-specific evidence and can irritate the skin. Avoid corrosive home mixtures and unregulated lightening products, and introduce one cosmetic active at a time.

Peels, laser and light procedures

These procedures are not interchangeable. Suitability, settings, recovery and the risk of burns, scarring or darker or lighter pigment depend on the established concern, skin tone, device and practitioner. A consultation may conclude that treatment should be postponed or not offered.

Questions for a consultation

Ask what cosmetic concern is being addressed, which exact product or device is proposed, what result is realistic, how pigment risk is reduced, what aftercare is required and who manages a complication.
