Dermal filler is injected into soft tissue. In the chin, selected placement may temporarily alter projection or contour. The result depends on existing bone and soft-tissue anatomy, the product, the amount used and technique; it cannot be guaranteed.
A dimple, crease, asymmetry, a small-looking chin and fullness beneath the chin are different concerns. Chin filler adds volume. It does not remove fat or change the underlying bone, and it is not a universal treatment for a double chin or chin dimple.
Common effects reported for dermal fillers include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching. Less common problems include lumps or nodules, infection, open wounds, allergy, asymmetry, migration and tissue damage.
Rare injection into a blood vessel can block blood flow and cause skin or tissue necrosis, visual disturbance or blindness, stroke and, very rarely, death. Unusual or severe pain, pale or blanched skin, mottling or other colour change, a vision change or stroke symptoms after treatment need urgent assessment; use emergency services for vision change or stroke symptoms.
Hyaluronidase may be considered to reduce or remove some hyaluronic-acid filler, but this is a separate clinical intervention with its own risks and may be incomplete. Some products, particularly non-hyaluronic or permanent fillers, may be difficult or impossible to remove completely and can require further procedures or surgery.
Suitability depends on medical history, medicines, allergy, previous filler or surgery, active infection or inflammation, pregnancy or breastfeeding considerations and treatment-specific factors. Cosmetic filler injection for people under 18 is prohibited in England except within the statutory exceptions described in government guidance.
