Chemical Facial Peel: Suitability, Limits and Risks | Dr Sknn

What is a chemical facial peel?

A chemical peel applies a formulation to exfoliate the skin. “Chemical peel” covers different products and depths, so the name alone does not tell you how the skin will react or how long recovery may take. Ask which exact peel is proposed rather than assuming that all peels have the same benefits or risks.

What should be checked first?

The treating practitioner should assess your skin, the intended cosmetic goal, relevant products and medicines, recent procedures, sun exposure and history of irritation or pigment change. Ask what preparation and aftercare apply to the actual formulation. A generic online schedule should not replace the instructions for your selected peel.

What are the limits and risks?

Some peels may change the appearance or feel of the skin, but a particular result is not guaranteed. Redness, peeling, irritation and temporary or lasting pigment changes can occur; deeper approaches carry greater recovery and other risks. A peel should not be advertised as detoxifying skin, generating collagen, removing scars or treating a medical condition without evidence for the exact formulation and use. Strong at-home peeling products can injure skin.

How is a peel different from a facial?

A general facial may focus on cleansing and comfort, while a peel uses a selected exfoliating formulation with its own assessment and aftercare. They are not interchangeable. Our skin-care treatment guide compares these choices. A changing lesion, painful symptom or suspected skin disease needs appropriate healthcare assessment, not a cosmetic peel. Dr Sknn is an independent private aesthetics and cosmetics clinic.
