A serum is a product format, not a treatment category, and a men's label does not tell you whether it suits your skin. The ingredients, concentration, full formula and your tolerance matter. A serum is optional: a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and daytime sun protection may be enough for a simple cosmetic routine.
What can a hydrating serum do?
Ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid can help skin feel hydrated when a product is formulated and used appropriately. They do not guarantee deep hydration, rebuild skin or replace a moisturiser for everyone. Try a small amount as the label directs, and notice whether your skin feels comfortable.
What about vitamin C and other “active” ingredients?
Some vitamin C products are used for the appearance of uneven tone, but no form or percentage is universally best and results vary. Marketing claims that a serum will tighten skin, boost collagen, clear acne or undo sun damage should be treated cautiously. A serum does not replace sunscreen. More active ingredients at once can increase irritation.
How do you add a serum to your routine?
Introduce one product at a time and follow its own directions; twice-daily use is not a universal rule. Apply to clean skin in the sequence recommended on the label, then use a suitable moisturiser and daytime sun protection. If a new product stings or causes lasting irritation, stop and seek appropriate advice. Avoid applying it to broken skin unless its instructions allow this.
When should you ask for an assessment?
Persistent painful breakouts, a changing mark, a rash or a skin reaction that does not settle needs an appropriate healthcare assessment. Dr Sknn is an independent private aesthetics and cosmetics clinic; a cosmetic consultation is not a substitute for healthcare assessment. We can discuss cosmetic preferences and suitable clinic options only where the active clinic and an eligible practitioner support them. Outcomes vary.
Wilmslow is our primary clinic and Didsbury is also active. Doctor, Nurse and Qualified Practitioner consultations are free; a separate £50 reservation fee applies to Doctor bookings only.
