Scar Cream: What It Can and Cannot Do

Can a scar cream change an established scar?

Scar cream is a broad label. A moisturiser can make healed skin feel more comfortable, but it cannot reliably erase a scar or refill a depressed acne scar. A scar's age, shape, cause and location all affect what may help. “Scar removal” claims on a tube can sound more certain than the evidence allows.

What about silicone gel or sheets?

Silicone products are different from an ordinary moisturiser. They may help the appearance or feel of some raised scars after the skin has closed, although results vary and they are not a solution for every scar. Follow the product instructions and seek advice if the area becomes irritated. Do not put a scar product on an open, infected or otherwise unhealed wound unless a healthcare professional has advised it.

Will oils or “regenerating” ingredients remove a scar?

We would not promise that essential oils, vitamins or botanical extracts repair scar tissue or prevent a scar from forming. Fragrance and other ingredients can irritate sensitive skin. A simple product that your skin tolerates may support comfort, but the marketing term “natural” does not prove that it is suitable or effective.

What can you do for a healed mark at home?

Protecting healed skin from the sun can help limit lasting colour contrast. Choose sun protection appropriate for your skin and follow the label. Give a new scar time to settle; visible changes often happen gradually, and some marks remain. If your concern is a hollow, pitted or strongly raised scar, a cream alone is unlikely to address its shape.

When should you ask for an assessment?

See an appropriate healthcare professional for a wound that is not healing, signs of infection, a changing or unexplained mark, or a painful, growing or very raised scar. That assessment is separate from choosing a cosmetic product. Do not delay it while trying a new cream.
