Phototherapy, LED and cosmetic skin care
“Phototherapy” is a broad term for treatment using light. It does not identify one device or one procedure. This guide explains the distinction relevant to a cosmetic LED enquiry at Dr Sknn.
Name the actual technology
LED, laser and intense pulsed light deliver light differently. Their intended uses, evidence, doses and precautions should not be treated as interchangeable. A broad light-therapy label cannot establish a diagnosis, suitability or an expected result.
Ordinary LED and photodynamic therapy
Photodynamic therapy uses a photosensitising agent alongside light. LED treatment without that agent is a different approach. Marketing for an LED session should not borrow the effects or medical recommendations of a separate photodynamic procedure.
Colour is only part of the specification
Red, blue and near-infrared describe different wavelength ranges. A device may use a single range or a combination. Output, exposure, intended use and individual suitability also matter; more colours or more sessions do not automatically mean a better result.
What this means for a cosmetic enquiry
Start with the appearance concern and ask which exact technology, model and programme would be proposed. Ask about the evidence, realistic limits, material risks, aftercare and total cost before deciding.
A cosmetic consultation is not a substitute for appropriate medical assessment of a skin condition. This page does not offer every form of phototherapy or establish that a particular medical programme is available at Dr Sknn.
Check the instructions and clinic scope
Tell the practitioner about medicines, light sensitivity, eye conditions, health conditions and recent procedures. Follow the eye-protection and treatment instructions for the actual device.
A consumer mask is not automatically equivalent to a clinic system. Confirm the exact current service, clinic and eligible practitioner rather than booking from the word “phototherapy” alone.
Common questions
Are all light-based treatments the same?
No. Technology, wavelength, dose, intended use and precautions differ.
Does LED automatically mean photodynamic therapy?
No. Photodynamic therapy also involves a photosensitising agent.
Does this guide confirm a particular device at the clinic?
No. The current device and suitable service must be checked for the exact clinic and eligible practitioner.
