The HIFU technology precisely heats up the SMAS, causing trauma to the tissue leading to improved elasticity and firmness in the skin over a period of time through the body’s natural repairing process. The friction between these molecules produces heat and thermal injury at a focal point within the skin tissue, generated at the target points leaving the skin’s surface unaffected.

The HIFU is delivered to this layer (SMAS) to cause trauma to the layer encouraging the repair and growth of new cells within this area. The SMAS is the section of the skin treated with HIFU to give a long-lasting tightening and lifting effect.

The result of this delivery process causes immediate trauma to the treatment zone which then promotes healing, immediate contraction and collagen stimulation through fibroblast activity resulting in a lifted, firmer and toned appearance of the skin.

Using three depths this focused application ensures the system can penetrate to specific depths unlike other skin tightening technologies.

How does High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) work?
By utilising the power of a triple layer lifting we target the areas treated with three different depths in a single treatment. The HIFU is ultrasound focused below the skin’s surface causing cellular friction within molecules and precise target-point heating. The friction between the molecules produces heat and thermal injury at the focal point of the HIFU delivery. Heat is created within the skin tissue, and is maximised at the target point. The tissue at these target points is heated to approximately 65°C, which create spaced ‘wounds’ or cones of heat through cellular friction. The result of this process promotes healing, immediate contraction and collagen stimulation through fibroblast activity within these treatment zones. The SMAS layer is the layer in which the muscles of the face and the soft tissue attach. It is a layer of tissue that attaches and surrounds the deeper tissues and structures of the face and neck, including the entire cheek area. It also attached to the platysma. During cosmetic surgery a portion of this SMAS is removed and then re-attached to give a longer lasting result than a traditional skin tightening face lift.
What should I expect during the Consultation?
At Dr Sknn, during the consultation a medical history including a physical examination will be performed including photographs. During the consultation there will be an opportunity to discuss any concerns, expectations, results, or questions you may have. Prior to the treatment any post treatment advice and risks associated with the treatment are discussed ensuring you fully understand them and a consent form is signed. Furthermore, if it is a new area being treated a small patch test will be performed in order to ensure suitability.
What to expect during the Treatment?
The area being treated will be thoroughly cleaned, marked and photographed, you will be provided with googles for protection, a clear gel will be applied to the treated area. The hand piece applicator is then positioned to the area being treated, the area will then be treated, the hand piece is then moved to the neighbouring area of the skin until the entire area has been treated. Once treatment is completed skincare products will be applied.
I want the HIFU treatment immediately can I just have it done?
At Dr Sknn, safety and eligibility to treatment is of highest priority, prior to any treatment, as no one size fits all, a full consultation will be performed and if found suitable to the treatment, a patch test will be performed. After 48 hours post patch testing we are able to deliver the treatment.
How Does HIFU Stimulate Collagen Production?
During the treatment the transducer delivers and deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jumpstarts a natural process, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen. The treatment itself doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins, it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.
Can HIFU Replace a Face Lift Procedure?
HIFU treats the deep SMAS layer addressed in cosmetic surgery, but won’t duplicate the results of a facelift. However it is a great alternative, especially for those not ready for surgery or for patients looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
Will I Need to Take Time off Work?
With a single HIFU treatment there is no downtime. After your procedure you will be provided with after care advice.
What Does HIFU Feel Like?
As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.
When can I expect results?
You may witness some in initial effect, but the ultimate “lifting and firming” will take place over 2-3 months, as collagen is renewed and placed with new stronger collagen. As this collagen building process continues, continued improvements can appear up to six months following a treatment.

How Many HIFU Treatments Will I Need?
Most clients only need one treatment. However this may be based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual’s collagen-building process, some clients may benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help clients keep pace with the body’s natural aging process.
Are There Any Side Effects?
The skin might appear flushed at first, this can be during treatment but sometimes lasting longer, the redness should however disappear within a few hours. Some clients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are temporary. Also you may experience headaches post treatment. However prior to treatment an outline of all potential side effect and possible complications will be provided.
What is the After Care Advice post HIFU treatment?

It is uncommon for a blister or bruise to develop. Should you develop a blister, a topical ointment such as sudocrem. Am I suitable for the treatment?
A good candidate is someone with skin that has relaxed to the point of, an often feeling, less firm. Typically, those in their thirties and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are good candidates. However prior to suitability a consultation will be performed to determine eligibility.
How do I prepare for the treatment?
Some of the pre-treatment advice is listed below. Please note that during the consultation you will be provided with a complete list. One week before the treatment: A Hydrafacial treatment is recommended one week before to help remove the dead skin before treatment.
I have had other procedures done recently can I have the HIFU treatment?
Depending on the type of other procedures performed there are specific wait times needed for before and after a HIFU treatment. During the consultation we will discuss which treatments, if any, have been done previously and advise recommended waiting times.
How many treatments will I need?
It is a one off treatment with a recommended maintenance top up every 12 months to combat the ageing process.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime, you are able to return to your normal activities however would require to follow the after care advice sheet.
